SiCC and SLCC take part in Young Rangers Project

On the 1st December 2024, four members of SiCC and SLCC went to the Quantocks for a trial of a Young Somerset program specifically for Care Leavers called Young Rangers. Member of SiCC and SLCC Amber Jane his written an article about her experience.

We travelled up to the Quantock hills with a worker from Young Somerset called Verity, who helps out with Young Rangers, where we began to learn important life skills out in nature. We began by working together to use flints to start up a fire so that we could cook sausages on the fire. Young Somerset is all about young people coming together and working together to complete activities or tasks. One task we worked together on was making hot water for hot drinks.

Young Rangers is an amazing opportunity for young people to help develop many skills like team building and practical skills.

Here is what one young person who took part on the trip said: “I think that something like Young Rangers would be really good for young people across the service to allow them to experience nature and freedom as well as a vast range of other activities.”

Members of SiCC and SLCC who participated on this trial session have expressed interest in supporting this project if the bid for it is successful.

Young Somerset is the largest youth and community support charity in Somerset, providing a range of bespoke services for young people and their families to suit the needs of the communities they operate in. For more information on Young Somerset, click here.

Did you know that if you are a young person in care or leaving care in Somerset then you automatically have the right to be a member of SiCC and SLCC?

The Somerset Care Council is a forum where young people in care or care leavers can have a voice about their lived experiences. This voice can help shape and review the services you use.

Through the core group, the creatives or the film crew, care experienced young people can contribute through doing surveys, creating films, interviewing new staff, contributing to our newsletter, attending virtual meetings or being connected through email or social media. Their views and opinions help to improve the way services are shaped in Children’s Social Care at Somerset Council.
